A subdued clientele are either patiently waiting or have no idea what they’re in for. Outside the moon is full and it’s soon time to howl. Beer is flowing and food consumed. The band is Bad Pickle and they prepare for sound check.

Amidst the sounds of tuning the lights are dimmed and Dan Spence – guitar, Patrick Fox – drums and Uncle Jack Smith – bass, greets the crowd with their rendition of “Black Magic Woman”. Feet begin to stomp and heads bob. At the end of the song Rob Puschelberg – vox, takes his place up front and commands our attention with his voice.

Just looking at the packed parking lot already set the vibe for the show. Walking into Mulligans I could instantly tell by the atmosphere that this was going to be a chillin’ show.

The Great Lakes Songwriting Contest is still accepting applications until September 1st. Although this event isn’t actually local to us here in the Kitchener/Waterloo area, some local talent has done very well at this contest in the past. The Cambridge Singer/Songwriter Competition has come to a close with a full house at Mulligan’s Sports Grill. Robbie Hancock of RJ Entertainment has outdone himself with the caliber of talent that he was able to attract for this competition. Local Vibe has been present for a couple of the weekly events that were qualifiers for this fantastic event and were never disappointed. This final segment was a culmination of many weeks of various artists playing their hearts out on the stage to try and win a spot in the semi-finals, which took place on June 17th and 18th. When it came down to this week, only 10 remained and the turnout to see who would take the top prizes was rather awesome.

The final night of the songwriting competition between 10 of the top qualifying competitors. The top 3 will take prizes including a $1500 first prize.
