Local Talent Wanted to Save Barra Castle

by on Mar.18, 2009, under Info, Local Talent, Other

In case you haven’t heard of Barra Castle, it is a fantastic building just blocks away from King Street in Kitchener that has fallen into such a state that we appear to be in jeopardy of losing it. The Castle previously held 18 apartments and has created memories for many people throughout the region. Lots of people either lived there at one point, or knew someone that did, or partied there a couple of times. Perhaps you have only been driving along Queen St. and admiring it for years and years.

Well there is still time to enjoy it and there will be at least one more time to party there. An awareness party is being planned for March 28th, to be held on the grounds of the Castle. This is a BYOB event that will be similar to a backyard barbeque with a purpose. Tari Bolt is organizing this event as an extension of her efforts to save this structure from death by bureaucracy. The current owner has given her permission to use the grounds, and she plans to make the most of it.

This creates an opportunity for local bands and musicians to gain some exposure, as she is looking for some entertainment to transform this from a small friendly get together into the kick-off of what may be an infamous local awareness campaign. Tari has stirred up quite a bit of noise about this issue already, and you can guarantee that there will be much more to come. She has started gathering names, friends and other contacts that are on her side when it comes to preserving this structure, and the local media is on board as well. You can view a story published in the KW Record back in January HERE, and also check out the facebook group that has been started for this cause HERE.

So what does this have to do with local music you ask? Well, we are proudly attempting to assist this cause in their efforts and as we mentioned, they are in need of some entertainment for this awareness party and we just happen to know of a band or two. We would like to encourage local artists to get involved in this event to help save the castle, get some exposure and have some fun. Musicians that are interested in donating their time to this cause can contact Tari through the facebook group, or send us an email to music@localvibe.ca and we will make sure to get you involved.

I agree with this cause very much. As a current Planning student at the University of Waterloo, we are looking at Barra Castle as an example of Heritage Planning. It is very important that we all try to preserve the history of our towns and communities. More people should come out and try to help save this unique building in the area.

    Katara…

A friend of mine suggested we get University students involved! Give me more details! If you can give us more details on how our University is even using Barra as an example of your studies…WOW that would be so UNIQUE and wonderful!

    Hey,

I just happened to catch this ad a little later unfortunately. Did the event really happen because I didn’t hear anything about it until now but if it hasn’t tell me what I can do and I would be more than happy to volunteer my time to help save the castle and I’m sure I can locate a few bands and singers or other sources of talent that feel the same way that I do and would love to help save Barra Castle.
