Heartwood Place is a charitable organization established in 2001 to address the serious need for more affordable housing in the Region of Waterloo. For the last 6 years they have been holding an annual fundraiser event to assist them in reaching their goals, while bringing fantastic local entertainment together for an evening that will leave you feeling like you are both giving and receiving at the same time.
Project Heartwood is currently raising funds for a 66 unit apartment building to be constructed at the former Cambridge Reporter site in downtown Galt. This project is twice the size of their initial success that was opened in October 2003 at 19 Gaukel Street in downtown Kitchener, providing 33 affordable units.
The project in Cambridge is substantially bigger, both in size and scope. They have to deal with site contamination, building demolition, and then the creation of a 7 story building that is set to contain 66 apartments that will remain affordable.
The total project cost for this project is tagged at $10.622 Million and their current goal is to raise $1.78 Million to act as their initial contribution while additional funds come from government grants, incentive programs, and other generous donors. The balance of the project will be financed through a first mortgage at a competitive interest rate.
This year the 7th annual Heartwood Blues event will be held at The Edelweiss Tavern on March 14th and will feature such fantastic artists as Colin White & The Blue Ribbon Players, Cheryl Lescom & The London Blues Machine, Shawn Kellerman, and special guest Mel Brown! Tickets for this event are $30 (including a meal) and can be purchased at Edelweiss Tavern, Heartwood Place (call 519-745-9315 x223), or they can be purchased online from the Heartwood Place website HERE.
