Local Vibe

There are very few people in music or show business that I rave about . Although the artist I am writing is not a local talent ; I am ; and with any luck we may have the privilege of hearing his musical talents soon.

Justin Lanning; A California based artist is one of them. I quite came across his music by accident but that is one accident I do not regret.

Self-taught from a young age on a variety of instruments, including guitar, piano, bass and drums, Lanning not only writes and performs his songs but also owns the publishing rights and masters and acted as his own A&R rep. Lanning even co-produced two tracks along with seasoned veteran Jeff Bova (Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Joe Cocker) and acted as financial backer for his upcoming album, which features additional songs produced by Steven Miller (Dave Matthews Band, Pink, Mandy Moore)

Justin seems to wear his heart on his sleeve when singing-putting everything out there. My favourite song is “Take my Breathe away ” . The first time i heard the words ; I choked up and without embarrassment ; I cried . When music makes an impact like that ; you know it’s real. It’s real talent . The lyrics alone are amazing but Justins voice evokes so much feeling. His music is pure innocence. He doesn’t sing of busting a cap or smackin’ bitches .

Justin posesses the power-pop sheen of Bryan Adams; the storytelling prowess of Billy Joel; the classic harmonic sophistication of the Beatles and the Beach Boys; the youthful exuberance of James Blunt; and the energy of blink-182. But like those musical heroes, Justin is his own man, and his songs come from a deep, and personal, emotional well that is unique to him.

“Behind these eyes ” is a song close to my heart and those of you who really know me, know why .

On “Voices,” where Lanning takes the listener along his search for meaning in the cosmos as the simple melody gradually builds to a multilayered peak centered on an urgent guitar riff. The album’s title track encapsulates Lanning’s uplifting message of personal growth and championing your inner child.

“Behind these Eyes ” is Justins debut – one of what I think will be many releases.

Although just 23 years old Justin is mature beyond his years .
