Grindstone

by on Jan.11, 2009, under Reviews

At last, I have my first proof that the music isn’t dead! I’ve had the pleasure of knowing a great guy named Pat Burns for quite some time now. Real easy going, doesn’t let things get to him; great guy, great drummer. Pat has been in numerous bands in the past but his latest collaboration is something to watch for.
The appropriately named “Grindstone” is a band with razor guitar riffs, deadly vocals, and kick (censored) drumming. With this Nirvana-esque band, getting your attention isn’t a chore at all.
I actually had the chance to play with Grindstone at a school event when they were short a bass player; five songs in ten minutes, and then learning one on the spot on stage, great fun. But that was my first time meeting guitarist and vocalist, Jeff Copoc, who you could swear was an incarnation of Kurt Cobain, without the attitude. I was actually playing a few other times with another band and on my own and my voice was just taking a beating. Luckily Jeff had some Buckley’s that he was generous enough to allow me a few swigs.
Along with being generally great guys, their music also happens to pack a punch and is really making its mark on the local music scene. Shows across Ontario and recording in the studio making their 12 song EP (Seeds of Paranoia) is only a small part of what this band has already and has yet to accomplish. This talented band gives hope to our generation of struggling musicians.
