Skimming the surface at Southwood

I’m pleased to introduce Vibe readers to Tyler Neely. I first heard Tyler at Mulligan’s in October, and contacted a friend at Rogers Daytime who booked him a spot right away.
When I saw him again last week at a jam with Libby McGrath (the review is coming) and he told me he really wants to be a writer I thought he was kissing butt to get a good review. I was wrong, this kid can also write. I can see the local musicians and writers battling it out for who is going to get this one!

Rock on and Happy New Year everyone! My name is Tyler Neely, a local singer/songwriter from Ayr. I know what you’re thinking, “Ayr, that ghost town?” But hey, that’s exactly my point; when you live in Ayr, music is about the only thing we’ve got going for us. That and illegal subject matter, but I’ll stay away from that. Writing a song or jamming out a tune on the guitar is something I’ve found a comfort in. It’s a great way to express what you think and what you experience; and doing just that has gotten me pretty far. Just last year I was nominated for a Niagara Music Award with my long time friend and singing partner Christilynn Guerin. You can actually hear the two of us on my myspace (www.myspace.com/tylerneel
I go to good old Southwood Secondary School and will be reporting what I learn from the local bands there, in later articles. Some people say the Cambridge music scene is dead; I don’t think that’s true. We just haven’t opened our ears enough to hear it.
Southwood has been very good to me in supporting my music; playing at all kinds of assemblies and school events. One teacher in particular has lent a great hand in getting me out there, Mr. Geisler, getting me greatly involved in the environmental causes at our school (such as Cape Farewell).
But as I was saying, I’m concentrating on the Southwood music scene. All the events, singers and bands that I get a chance to encounter. I’m really looking forward to learning more about the fellow musicians around me, and getting to know how they keep it going.
Music gets me through a lot, and it will be a pleasure to find the life in the sounds of Southwood students. Hopefully they share the same drive and passion that I do.
