Werewolves Invade Cambridge
by band or musician submitted on Dec.01, 2008, under Info, Local Talent, Other, Reviews
A warning to local residents. Wolves have been sighted in Cambridge in the core. These are not the lecherous local wolves who are usually seen in the downtown core with their female counterparts, Cambridge Cougars. These newcomers are more more dangerous. It seems that they have the ability to mesmerize their victims.
This migrant pack traveled from Ketch Harbour Nova Scotia before splitting between Cambridge and Toronto. The Cambridge members walk around disguised as students at the School of Architecture, but at night they prowl the streets of the Village of Cambridge, looking for a places to howl at the moon.
If you happen to come across this pack, don’t panic. Don’t move, stop and listen. Here’s the story on them.
Ketch Harbour Wolves are at once near and distant, intimate and vast. Their music
ranges from episodes of sprawling emotional energy to moments of cathartic stillness.
Imagine the rich baritone of The National carried by Arcade Fire arrangements through
a Leonard Cohen wilderness.
In May of 2008, Ketch Harbour Wolves released their sophomore EP, Dead Calm
Horizon, which critics have hailed as “From start to fi nish, top to bottom, one of the most
perfect albums to come out this year.” (www.iheartmusic.net) Building on themes explored
in their previous work, the meticulously crafted EP maps out a rich constellation of
emotions, mixing elements of driving indie rock and traditional songwriting into a
strikingly unique blend. Unrelenting perfectionists and slaves to their art, the band
recorded, mixed and produced every detail of Dead Calm Horizon themselves, right
down to the hand rendered artwork. As the perfect finishing touch, the album was
mastered by acclaimed engineer Noah Mintz (Feist, The National, Broken Social Scene).
The result is truly a ‘total work of art’ – the testament of a driven creative team with a
tremendous dedication to their craft.
The Wolves hail from across Ontario, yet foster a deep connection to Ketch Harbour
(Nova Scotia). It was there at the edge of the ocean that the band began to grow in the
tiny coastal village – at which point KHW was merely a seedling nurtured by vocalist/
guitarist Jonathan Tyrrell and percussionist Brian Urbanik. Ketch Harbour Wolves were
born five-strong on the familiar ground of Toronto with bass guitarist Scott Winter,
lead guitarist Liam Brown, and multi-instrumentalist Kristjan Bergey (keyboards, fl ute,
saxophone) completing the dynamic and powerful quintet.
Ketch Harbour Wolves have recently been cited as one of the “Top 10 Hottest bands in
Canada” by popular blog site www.herohill.com. With live performances both explosive
and captivating, the band has developed a loyal following in Toronto and beyond.
They’ve headlined such esteemed venues as The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, Th e Mod
Club Theatre and The El Mocambo, consistently drawing passionate crowds. Ketch
Harbour Wolves have showcased at NxNE in both 2007 and 2008, and were recently
featured in Toronto Indie Week’s ‘Best of the Fest’ showcase. Their music has been
featured on independent radio from Newfoundland to Texas and two of their songs are
soon to be featured in the upcoming documentary “Standing Spirit”.
Already hard at work on their next album, Ketch Harbour Wolves are poised to become
a significant voice in Canadian music. I(heart)music urges it’s readers to “Catch Ketch
Harbour Wolves (right now)” and HeroHill testifi es that “Sometimes a band starts to not
only speak to you, but speak for you and as more people start listening to KHW, the more fans
will start singing along … Easily one of the best Canadian EPs of the year.”
